A cough is one of the most common medical problems. The vast majority of patients with this problem never see a doctor as it is well known that the vast majority of coughs are self-limited and go away with or without treatment. Nonetheless, coughs can be annoying and the sign of a serious problem. Basically, there are two types of cough, an acute cough (3 weeks or less) or a chronic cough (3 weeks or more). You should also be aware that many patients have more that one reason for a cough. For example, the patient who has a chronic cough from allergies may also have a cold. Thus, this INFOMED will list overlapping possibilities.
